How to Find a Job in the Social Work Field

how to find a job in the social work field

Social work is evident in different places, such as hospitals and schools. The social workers help people deal with various issues such as abuse, relationship conflicts, and financial management. The clinical social workers also examine and treat people with mental, emotional, and behavioral problems.

Do you want to be a social worker? If you love helping others, you should be one. As it is a flexible career option, you can specialize in multiple areas. But how to find a job in the social work field? Follow the tips below:

Pursue a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree

A social work career demands workers have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work. You can also take courses in human development, psychology, sociology, or gerontology. If you are interested in studying multiple subjects, you can choose one as a major and the other as a minor.

Though you can get various social work jobs only with a Bachelor’s degree, you need a Master’s degree to be a clinical worker. The postgraduate degree helps you to get a license to do clinical social work and additional qualifications to build a great career in this field. You get more internship or volunteering opportunities when you pursue an advanced degree course as well.

Do Internship and Volunteering

You should do internships and volunteer to acquire experience in social work and network with other social workers. Training is necessary to finish your master’s degree course and earn a clinical social work license. Contact your local organizations or career center and search online job portals to get a good internship opportunity.

Employers look for willing and empathetic social workers. If the recruiters see in your resume that you did volunteering, they would prefer you over non-experienced candidates. Do volunteering for positions that help needy people such as a camp counselor, peer adviser, or mentor. You can find great volunteer opportunities in your college’s placement cell, local community, or an organization’s website.

Choose the Right Specialization

Once you decide the type of social activity you want to do, you can choose the specialization accordingly. The different kinds of social work specializations are administration, substance abuse, community social work, and family and child social work. Before choosing a specialization, you can research various career opportunities, relevant education requirements, and the environment.

Get Certifications

You should get certifications to improve your knowledge and skills in a social work-related subject. Some trade schools and colleges’ certifications focus, for example, on forensics, school activities, and child development.

Upgrade Your Resume

Your resume and cover letter must be perfect for getting the desired job. Fill your resume with relevant education, work experience, certifications, licensure, internships, and fieldwork experience.

Grow Your Network

Many organizations recruit people depending on their personality. Build a network with like-minded people who can notify you about great job opportunities and help you develop your personality. Participate in social activities and professional organization events, such as workshops and events. If you join a social work association, you get access to lectures, workshops, and job and networking opportunities.
